After Wednesday

Happy Fall, Crusaders! The first week of the fall season is upon us, all official and what not according to that wacky farmer’s almanac, and as we close out September I have pulled what I think is worth your time from my big inbox pile. Here is what I liked this week:

The Eighth Seal (w) James Tynion IV (a) Jeremy Rock (c) Nolan Woodard (l) Troy Peteri, Thrillbent Comics

As October, the consensus creepiest month of the year, draws near, comic publishers begin to roll out the scary. Over at Thrillbent, the creepy has been in full swing for a bit now with four chapters of this supernatural gem up for your reading pleasure. The story thus far is that the First Lady of the US is not…well feeling herself. The story is good, but it is the way the story is told one click at a time, something Thrillbent is constantly improving upon, that has some truly unnerving reveals and surprises. The Lone Ranger Annual 2013 (w) Shannon Eric Denton (a) Matt Triano (c) Dinei Ribeiro (l) Rob Steen, Dynamite Entertainment $4.99

Second week running Dynamite Entertainment gives us a licensed property story that is quite solid. I have no inkling about the story or the mythology of the Lone Ranger, and my own ignorance does not diminish this one-shot tale about possible redemption. Also contributing to this making the list is some very nice panel and sequence work by Matt Triano. If you are a fan of the western genre you will be pleased with this one.

Dark Horse Comics, $19.99

I was unaware of this as a serialized web comic, but thankfully the folks at Dark Horse Publishing have made the decision to reproduce in full this intriguing work by Cameron Stewart. Sin Titulo is Stewart’s spin on the unlikely gumshoe narrative, which he has crafted as a darker, more imaginative exercise that questions the relationships of reality and art. Stewart also gives us novices a real look and some food for thought about the mechanics of sequential cartooning and storytelling, rolling out his narrative in an eight-panel page format. This is a story that belongs as apart of a collected works book club discussion (What’s that? Don’t have one… Well, start one; what are you waiting for?), and I hope people engage with it and in turn with others.

“Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard, Volume 2 #3″ (w/a) Eric Canete, C.P.Wilson III, Cory Godbey, David Peterson, Scott Keating, Archaia Entertainment $3.50

The wait for each installment of this is tough, but so worth it when it finally hits. Beautiful art combined with nice morality play-type stories about heroism is the premise of the series which provides some great escapism for a range of ages. Its hard to choose the best short in any issue, as everyone brings their A game to the table.
