It is finally October, crusaders, and we here at Capeless are excited about the avalanche of books happening in the coming weeks leading up to the end of the year. Here is what I found worthwhile from my pull-box this week:

“The Occultist #1″ (w) Tim Seeley (a) Mike Norton (c) Allen Passalaque (l) Nate Piekos, Dark Horse Comics, $3.50
The buddy detective story genre gets a very entertaining, supernatural spin. I have not followed Seeley closely over the years, but his pace and and development here is high level comics entertainment that has me curious about some of his other work. A nice first chapter with a competent blend of humor, scares, and a pathos for the main character. On art duties is Mike Norton, fresh off a win at the Harvey Awards for best web comic with Battlepug, who provides some nice moments.

“Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time #9″ (w) Scott and David Tipton (a) David Messina (I) Giorgia Sposito (c) Scarlet Gothica (l) Tom B. Long, IDW Publishing, $3.99
The reveal of the big bad is finally here as the year long story brings readers into the modern, re-vamped era of the Doctor via the ninth incarnation. The Tiptons have done a great job writing each incarnation, and each month a different artist, many who have worked on the doctor’s comic adventures in the past, have stepped in to pay tribute to our favorite time lord. IDW is doing a full HC collection after the run with extras and insights, which will be a great artifact for fans of the show. If Who-vians have been holding out for the “Rose” era, this is time to get on board as the mini winds up in the coming months, and may very well tie-into the surprises awaiting fans of the show.
Writer Curt Pires is attempting with this issue to interpret the idea of beauty and present a “liquid” narrative. I know this because that is his description in the fascinating notes pages at the end of an issue that is intriguing, a bit confusing, nicely composed, challenging, and a real treat for those looking for a comic that has no clear answers, but aspires to push comic storytelling. I encourage others to read the first two issues as the whole set of three will run you a whopping $3.00, and worth every penny. This is a digital only title available through comixology http://www.comixology.com/Theremin-3/digital-comic/46730
A perfect comic for the middle school age set about our first alien exchange student on earth that is one part light hearted, one part message about bullying and remaining positive. Keep your eye on this title, it is scheduled to update on Thrillbent every Tuesday. Read it at http://thrillbent.com/comics/albert-the-alien/#1

“Mark Waid’s The Green Hornet #6″ (w) Mark Waid (a) Ronilson Freire (c) Marcio Menyz (l) Troy Peteri, Dynamite Entertainment, $3.99
Mark Waid continues to be a the top of his game as a genre writer and this issue is a great example that Daredevil is not his only strong showing. The Hornet is trying to infiltrate the underworld, and it is a delight to watch him smack around mobsters and establish a presence as a man who will not be swayed from his goals. Ronilson Freire joins the roster of artists that compliment the vision Waid is trying to produce in his canon, and for a non-major book, the quality is extremely high.

“Quantum and Woody #4″ (w) James Asmus (a) Tom Fowler (c) Jordie Bellaire (l) Dave Lanphear, Valiant Comics, $3.99
I have been waiting for this series to really break out and put everything it is capable of on the table, and issue #4 finally delivers. Asmus and Fowler have a great action comedy with subtle hints of emotion and points about the bonds of family working, and for the first time I am excited about the next issue now that we have the introductory stuff out of the way. Oh, and the Goat is very, very for real.
So that is it for another week. Please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below, over at our Facebook page, or mention us on Twitter ( @capelesscrusade) with the tag #afterwednesday. Happy reading, everyone!
